What is a Fascinator Hat? – What are Fascinators?

A fascinator or fascinator hat is a head piece that is worn on a ladies head but differs from a normal hat, as it is mounted on base, usually a headband or comb and fastened to their hair and are most commonly worn at weddings and horse racing events.

The fascinator’s origins can be traced back to the grandes dames of the 18th century, when hair pieces in the form of powdered wigs were so large that hats became impossible to wear and fell out of ladies’ fashion.  Instead, the powdered wigs were festooned with all manner of ornaments, trinkets, jewels, ribbon and feathers – this included large items such as large replica carriages, replica sailing ships and even bird cages with live birds inside!  And so the fascinator, not quite as we know it today, was born.

fascinator hats, largely extinct by the 1970s, the fascinator has had a real revival in the noughties, and is now used as an alternative to hats both at weddings, other formal occasions (such as Ladies Day at Ascot) and even at evening parties, where they are sometimes referred to as a cocktail hats.

How are Fascinators worn?

How to wear a fascinator…? Well, a fascinator can be worn in many different ways, and depending on its style, it can be worn to the front or the side of the head.

A fascinator can also be worn as you would a tiara or towards the back of the head if your hair is to be dressed up in a chignon or curls.

Hair fascinators are usually attached to hair combs, beak clips, alligator clips and headbands. Many fascinators are created with ribbon, feathers, flowers, diamanties, crystals and other materials such as voile, satin and chiffon. Comb Fascinators

Comb Fascinators, a different option to headband Fascinators

With comb fascinators, people seem to worry more about fitting and wearing a comb although, for most people they will be a good option over headband fascinators.

Except from women with fine hair, most women find they can easily fit a comb Fascinator, and after a little practice they can practically fit the comb in their sleep.

A comb fascinator hat can come in several widths depending on the size of the fascinator. They are usually clear so the comb of the fascinator wont show anyway once fitted.

Putting on the comb fascinator you basically backcomb your hair slightly in the area of your head where you plan to wear your comb fascinator. This will thicken the hair. Then give this area a good spray with hairspray. Apply some hairspray also to the comb part of the fascinator, NOT the fascinator itself. Then fit the comb fascinator by sliding it through your hair from front to crown and then lower it slightly and  slide it back towards the front into place while holding the surrounding hair until secure. A few tries and you will be able to fit your comb fascinator in the dark.

If you are having your hair styled by your hairdresser for the occasion or wedding, you could ask them to fit your comb fascinator for you or show you how to do it yourself in advance of your big day.

Many people, brides and wedding guests especially try to match perfectly the colour or material of the fascinator to a dress or outfit and find that its a very difficult task, as no 2 materials will ever give that perfect match.  We advise that you look to contrast your choice of fascinator with your choice of outfit.  A suggestion, as an example would be to wear a bronze or gold coloured fascinator with an ivory or white outfit.  A black fascinator is a very good contrast colour and goes with almost everything.  Look at all the variations of colour for your comb fascinator and identify what would be a good contrast to your outfit.  It works better than you might think and will result in a fascinating look!
